A SERVICE OF WORD AND SACRAMENT
Easter, Year C
South Sydney Uniting Church
The Gathering of the People of God
CALL TO WORSHIP
Alleluia! Christ is risen.
He is risen indeed. Alleluia!
In the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit; one God, Mother of us all.Amen.
The grace of our Saviour Jesus Christ
and the love of God
and the friendship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
And also with you.
In the Gospel we hear how Jesus appeared to his disciples
to calm their fears and assure them of his presence.
In the Eucharist, Christ does the same for us
as he accompanies us in our journey of faith.
Jesus, you are the Messiah
who suffered and rose from the dead for the forgiveness of sins.
Jesus, the law, the prophets, and the psalms
find their fulfillment in you.
Jesus, you open our minds
to understand the Scriptures.

SONG ‘Christ be our light’
Longing for light, we wait in darkness.
Longing for truth, we turn to you.
Make us your own, your holy people,
light for the world to see.
Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.
Shine through the darkness.
Christ, be our light!
Shine in your church gathered today.
Longing for peace, our world is troubled.
Longing for hope, many despair.
Your word alone has pow’r to save us.
Make us your living voice.
Longing for food, many are hungry.
Longing for water, many still thirst.
Make us your bread, broken for others,
shared until all are fed.
Longing for shelter, many are homeless.
Longing for warmth, many are cold.
Make us your building, sheltering others,
walls made of living stone.
Many the gifts, many the people,
many the hearts that yearn to belong.
Let us be servants to one another,
making your kingdom come.
God of Abraham and Sarah,
God of Isaac and Rebecca,
God of Jacob and Rachel,
God of all our ancestors in faith,
you fulfilled your promise of old
that your Christ would suffer and so rise to glory.
Open our minds to understand the Scriptures
and fill us with joyful wonder in the presence of the risen Christ,
that we may be his witnesses to the ends of the earth.
We ask this through Jesus Christ,
the first-born from the dead,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
God for ever and ever. Amen.
The Liturgy of the Word
Praise the Word of truth and life!
The Good News and Power of God.
Praise to you, O Jesus Christ.
PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION
To the God of our ancestors who has glorified the Servant Jesus,
let us pray not only for our own needs but also those of the whole world.
Stay with us, O God.
... Jesus, do not walk ahead of us, we may not follow;
do not walk behind us, we may not lead;
just walk beside us and be our friend.
We make our prayers to God through you,
Christ our Saviour.Amen.
CONFESSION OF FAITH
In unity with the whole Church, let us stand and affirm the faith into which we were baptised.
Do you believe in God?
We believe in God above us,
Maker and Sustainer of all life,
of sun and moon,
of water and earth,
of male and female.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ?
We believe in God beside us,
Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh,
born of a woman, servant of the poor,
tortured and nailed to a tree.
A man of sorrows, he died forsaken.
He descended into the earth,
to the place of death.
On the third day he rose from the tomb.
He ascended into Heaven to be everywhere present,
and his kingdom will come on earth.
Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?
We believe in God, Holy Spirit,
life-giving Breath of the Church,
Spirit of healing and forgiveness,
source of resurrection and of eternal life.
Liturgy of the Eucharist
May the peace of the risen Christ
which dispels all fear, be with you.
And also with you.
GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
God is here.
God’s Spirit is with us.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to God.
Let us give thanks to the God of love.
It is right to offer thanks and praise.
It is indeed right to give you our thanks and praise, O God,
for in great love you have made us your children
and destined us for life in union with your Own, Jesus Christ.
You are the creator of heaven and earth and the author of life.
You revealed your purposes
through the law of Moses, the prophets and the psalms,
and declared your intention to suffer as a servant among us
so that you might bring forgiveness to the nations.
V1: Your Word came to fulfilment in your servant, Jesus,
the Holy and Righteous One,
who was rejected and handed over to death.
V2: He was killed through our ignorance,
but after three days in the tomb
you raised him from the dead.
Now he embraces us with hands still holed,
and disturbs our fears and doubts
with words of peace
and the promise of life yet to be revealed.
Therefore we sing (761):
Holy, Holy, Holy God, wisdom, strength and hope,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of our God.
Hosanna in the highest.
We acclaim you, Holy One,
all your actions reveal your wisdom and love.
To you be glory, almighty God,
because on the night before he died ...
Gracious God, we now celebrate the memorial of our redemption.
From the gifts you have given us
we offer you this bread and this cup,
and proclaim the mystery of our faith,
Christ has died,
Christ is risen,
Christ will come in glory.
Therefore, loving God,
recalling now Christ’s death and resurrection,
we ask you to accept this our sacrifice of praise.
Send your Holy Spirit upon us and our celebration,
that we may be fed with the body and blood of Christ
and be filled with your life and goodness.
Strengthen us to do your work,
and to be your body in the world.
Unite us in Christ and give us your peace.
We praise you with all creation, in union with all the saints
and give you glory through Jesus Christ our Saviour.
Blessing, honour and glory be yours,
here and everywhere, now and forever. Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER
Abba God in heaven,
glory to you!
Your rule of love renews the earth.
In your name, we take part in that renewal
helping, and not harming,
caring, and not coercing ...
We pray that we might receive with thanks
the bread we need,
the money we need,
the warmth we need ...
We pray that forgiveness and freedom
flow through our lives.
Teach us that in sharing life
we live life to the full ...
Remind us that evil is real.
Still, we are not afraid of it,
that love is stronger than hate,
justice other than revenge,
true peace the work of your Spirit.
BREAKING OF THE BREAD
When Jesus was at table with them,
he took the bread and blessed and broke it,
and gave it to them.
And their eyes were opened
and they recognised him
in the breaking of the bread.
LAMB OF GOD
Jesus, Wisdom of God,have mercy on us.
Jesus, Word made flesh, have mercy on us.
Jesus, Liberator of creation, grant us peace.
PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION
May Christ live on in us
blessing our feeble efforts to create a better world
where there is justice and hope for all.Amen.
The Sending Forth of the People of God
Through the resurrection of Christ,
God has saved you and made you adopted children.
May God bless you with joy.Amen.
The Redeemer has given you lasting freedom.
May you inherit abundant life.Amen.
By faith, you rose with Christ in baptism.
May your lives be holy,
so that you will be united with God forever.Amen.
May God bless you …+
Our celebration is ended.
Go and be witnesses of the risen Christ
by your loving service to one another. Amen.
Thanks be to God! Alleluia! Alleluia!
