A SERVICE OF WORD  AND SACRAMENT

Advent 2, Year B
South Sydney Uniting Church
December 4, 2011

The Gathering of the People of God

CALL TO WORSHIP

Love and faithfulness have met;
justice and peace have embraced.
Fidelity will sprout from the earth
and justice will lean down from heaven.

SONG ‘All who love and serve your city’ (634/165)

GREETING

Blessed is the Holy Trinity of love,
Father, Son, Holy Spirit,
One God, mothering all creation;
and blessed is the reign of God,
now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Grace and peace from our Loving God
and our Saviour Jesus Christ.
And also with you.

Acknowledgement of Indigenous custodians; welcome to visitors.

SONG ‘Light one candle ...’ (286)

 Light one candle for hope,
 one bright candle for hope.
God brings hope to every heart.
 Christ comes! Christ comes!

Light one candle for peace ...

Lighting the first and second Advent candles.

PENITENTIAL RITE

Silence.

Be near to us with your forgiveness, God,
and keep us attentive to your advent.
Lead us to everlasting life.
Amen.

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

Jesus says, I am committing myself to you.
Thanks be to God.

RESPONSE

L: Among the poor,
R: among the proud,
L: among the persecuted,
R: among the privileged,
L: Christ is coming,
All: Christ is coming to make all things new.

Let us actively prepare for the day of the Saviour’s coming
and cooperate with God to create a new and just world.

EPISTLE 2 Peter 3:8-15a

May your word live in us, O God.
And bear much fruit to your glory.

HOMILY

INTERCESSIONS

That all of us here may be open to change and renewal
and that we may live our faith without cowardice or compromise,
let us pray: Come, Jesus our Saviour.

... Christ, make us open to the Spirit of wisdom and courage
who was active in you.
Convert us to you and to your good news,
that you may truly live among us, now and for ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist

THE PEACE

The peace of the Promised One be with you all.
And also with you.

We share a sign of peace.

OFFERING

INVITATION

Every Eucharist is a sign of hope that God is with us in our world.
Let us give thanks to God for this.

GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

God is here.
God’s Spirit is with us.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to God.
Let us give thanks to the God of love.
It is right to offer thanks and praise.

Thanks and praise, glory and honour
are rightly yours, O God,
for you alone are worthy.

You are the Alpha and the Omega,
the First and the Last.
In you the hope for our redemption was born,
and in Christ Jesus, it is accomplished.
By your Spirit, keep us in that faith
until in glory your kindom comes.

And we will sing ... (761):
Holy, holy, holy God, wisdom, strength and hope,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of our God.
Hosanna in the highest.

By water and the Spirit
you open the kindom to all who believe,
and welcome us to your table:
for by grace we are saved, through faith.

GOSPEL Mark 13:1-14:31

Pour out the Holy Spirit on us
and on these gifts of bread and wine,
that they may be for us the body and blood of Christ.

Through your Beloved, Jesus Christ,
in your holy Church,
all honour and glory are yours, O God,
now and for ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Let us pray in the words of Jesus
to the God of all
that we may do God’s will
and give shape to the kindom:

L: Abba God in heaven, hallowed be your name!
R: May your reign come,
may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven:
L: give us today the bread we need.
R: And forgive us our debts,

as we hereby forgive those who are indebted to us.
Don’t put us to the test, but free us from evil.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD

Let us receive what we are;
let us become what we receive:
the body of Christ.

LAMB OF GOD (765)

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
have mercy on us, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
have mercy on us, have mercy on us.
Servant of God, you take away the sin of the world,
grant us peace, grant us peace.

THE COMMUNION

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

God of grace,
you renew us at your table with the bread of life.
May this food strengthen us in love
and help us to serve you in each other.
We ask this in the name of Jesus the Saviour. Amen.

The Sending Forth of the People of God

Notices.

GOSPEL Mark 14:32-16:8

The Good News and Power of God.
Praise to you, O Jesus Christ.

SONG ‘There’s a light upon the mountain’ (276)

BLESSING

God of the watching ones,
the waiting ones,
the slow and suffering ones,
the angels in heaven,
the child in the womb,
give us your benediction,
your good Word for our souls,
that we might rest and rise
in the kindness of your company.

May Almighty God bless you ... + Amen.

DISMISSAL

Go out into the world in the power of the Spirit;
in all things, at all times,
remember that Christ comes to meet you;
make your life your worship
to the praise and glory of God. Amen.
