A SERVICE OF WORD  AND SACRAMENT

Transfiguration, Year A
South Sydney Uniting Church
March 6, 2011

The Gathering of the People of God

CALL TO WORSHIP

YHWH reigns,
and the nations tremble! ...

“You are holy and mighty,
a Leader who loves justice,
who established honesty and justice in Israel!
You have done this!
We exalt you, YHWH, YHWH,
and we worship at your footstool.
You are holy!”

SONG: ‘Joyful, joyful, we adore you’ (152)

GREETING

Blessed is the Holy Trinity of love,
Father, Son, Holy Spirit,
One God, mothering all creation;
and blessed is the reign of God,
now and ever and to the ages of ages.
Amen.

May grace and peace be yours in abundance
through your knowledge of our God
and of Jesus our Sovereign.
And also with you.

Acknowledgement of Indigenous custodians; welcome to visitors.
Lighting the Christ Candle.

PENITENTIAL RITE

Jesus Christ, God’s beloved Child,
hear our prayer and save us.
Ky-ri-e e-le-i-son (760).

Jesus Christ, God’s Chosen One,
hear our prayer and save us.
Chris-te e-le-i-son.

Jesus Christ, God’s Anointed One,
hear our prayer and give us peace.
Ky-ri-e e-le-i-son.

Silence for personal confession.

FORGIVENESS

Though the glory of God is a consuming fire,
before which we tremble,
Jesus comes to us,
touching us with mercy
and saying, “Get up! Don’t be afraid.”

Jesus says, “Your sins are forgiven!”
Thanks be to God.

COLLECT

Let us pray that we become like Christ.

Almighty and loving God,
we thank you for revealing your Child Jesus in glory
before he suffered and died.
Give us faith to recognise him
as your Own,
and strengthen us to suffer with him,
until we come to share his glory.
For he lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word

Your word, O God, is a lamp to our feet:
a light to our path.

EPISTLE 2 Peter 1:16-21

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION (702)

Al-le-lu-ia, al-le-lu-ia, al-le-lu-ia,
al-le-lu-ia, al-le-lu-ia, al-le-lu-ia!

GOSPEL Matthew 17:1-9

The Good News and Power of God.
Praise to you, O Christ, Light of the world!

HOMILY

SILENCE

INTERCESSIONS

Before he suffered, Jesus showed his disciples that God had sent him to be the fulfilment of everything that was written about him in Moses and the prophets.
Let us pray that God would fulfil all things through Christ, Light of the world.

God of glory, hear our prayer.

... God our Saviour, it is good that we should be here, in your presence.
Hear our prayers for the world and for all in need, in the name of your Beloved. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist

OFFERING: ‘Christ, be our light’ (Bernadette Farrell)

Longing for peace, our world is troubled.
 Longing for hope, many despair.
Your word alone has power to save us.
 Make us your living voice.

Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts.
 Shine through the darkness.
 Christ, be our light!
Shine in your church gathered today.

Many the gifts, many the people,
many the hearts that yearn to belong.
Let us be servants to one another,
 making your kingdom come.

Christ, be our light! Shine in our hearts ...

THE PEACE

The peace of the Transfigured One be with you all.
And also with you.

INVITATION

GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

The people stand.

God is here.
God’s Spirit is with us.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to God.
Let us give thanks to the God of love.
It is right to offer thanks and praise.

It is right, and a good and joyful thing,
always and everywhere to give thanks to you,
God Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

God of all times and all places,
in the splendour of your glory
you called forth light from darkness,
day from night, land from oceans,
and life in all its dazzling array from lifeless matter.

L: Among the living you made and called humankind
 imprinting upon us your image,
as bearers of your glory in the world.

R: Though we failed to shine, and hid your image within us,
you continued to call us into fellowship with you
and to fulfill your mission for us
 through prophets, scriptures, priests,
and a people you redeemed for yourself.

And so, with your people on earth
and all the company of heaven
we praise your name and join their unending hymn (761):
Holy, holy, holy God, wisdom, strength and hope,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
 Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of our God.
 Hosanna in the highest.

Holy are you, and blessed is your Own Jesus Christ.
In him we see the fullness of your glory
revealed in human form.

Born into poverty, he fulfilled his mother’s song,
that you would fill the hungry with good things,
and send the rich away empty.

L: Declaring the nearness of your reign of love,
he forgave sinners, cast out demons,
raised the dead, restored the blind and lame,
visited the sick, the prisoners and the needy,
and gathered disciples to continue to declare
the good news in word and deed,
transfiguring the world in the power of your Spirit.

R: By the baptism of his suffering, death and resurrection
you gave birth to your church,
delivered us from slavery to sin and death,
and made with us a new covenant
 by water and the Spirit.

On the night ...

And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ,
we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving
as a holy and living sacrifice,
in union with Christ’s offering for us,
as we proclaim the mystery of faith (757):
 Christ has died,
 Christ is risen,
 Christ will come again.

Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here,
and on these gifts of bread and wine.
Make them to be for us the body and blood of Christ,
that we may be for the world the body of Christ,
 redeemed by his blood.

By your Spirit, make us one with Christ,
 one with each other,
and one in ministry to all the world,
until Christ comes in final victory,
and we feast at the heavenly banquet.
Through your Beloved Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit in your holy church,
all honour and glory is yours, almighty God,
 now and for ever. Amen.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

R: Abba God in heaven, hallowed be your name!
L: May your reign come,
may your will be done on earth as it is in heaven:
R: give us today the bread we need.
L: And forgive us our debts,
as we hereby forgive those who are indebted to us.
Don’t put us to the test, but free us from evil.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD

Let us receive what we are;
let us become what we receive:
the body of Christ.

LAMB OF GOD (765)

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
have mercy on us, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
have mercy on us, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world,
grant us peace, grant us peace.

THE COMMUNION

The Word became flesh and stayed for a little while among us;
we saw the Word’s glory
the favour and position a parent gives an only child
filled with grace, filled with truth.
Thanks be to God.

Come, everything is ready.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Almighty and loving God,
we thank you for revealing your Child Jesus in glory
before he suffered and died.
Give us faith to recognise his presence with us
in this sacrament,
and strengthen us to suffer with him,
until we come to share his glory.
For he lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever. Amen.

The Sending Forth of the People of God

Notices.

BLESSING

Go now and make known the loving power
of our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Bow at God’s feet,
and serve the God of love with joy. Amen.

Our Creator God
show you the light of divine glory
in the face of God’s Own,
so that you may be a light to the world. Amen.

Go in peace.
You have seen the majesty of our Saviour.
In the name of Christ. Amen.
