A SERVICE OF WORD AND SACRAMENT

Palm Sunday, Year B
South Sydney Uniting Church
April 1, 2012

The Gathering of the People of God

CALL TO WORSHIP

Let us worship God.

SONG ‘Ride on, ride on in majesty’ (348)

GREETING

In the name of God:
Creator, Redeemer, and Giver of Life.
Amen.

Grace and peace to you from God.
God fill you with peace and joy.

Acknowledgement of Indigenous custodians;
welcome to visitors.
Christ candle is lit.

PENITENTIAL RITE

Silence for personal confession.

Jesus, over the broken glass of our world,
the rumours meant to hurt,
the prejudice meant to wound,
the weapons meant to kill,
ride on ...
trampling our attempts at disaster into dust.
Show us compassion, O God.

Jesus, over the distance
which separates us from you,
and it is such a distance,
measurable in half truths,
in unkept promises,
in second-best obedience,
ride on ...
until you touch and heal us,
who feel for no one but ourselves.
Show us compassion, O Christ.

Jesus, through the back streets
and the sin bins
and the sniggered-at corners of the city,
where human life festers
and love runs cold,
ride on ...
bringing hope and dignity
where most send scorn and silence.
Show us compassion, O God.

For you, O Christ, do care
and must show us how.
On our own,
our ambitions rival your summons
and thus threaten good faith
and neglect God’s people.
In your company and at your side,
we might yet help to bandage and heal
the wounds of the world.

DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS

Jesus says, Your sins are forgiven.
Jesus says, I am committing myself to you.
Thanks be to God!

SONG ‘Faith will not grow from words alone’ (691)

The Liturgy of the Word

We stand.

LENTEN GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Let us stand to acclaim God’s saving justice,
attested by the Law and the prophets,
and now revealed through faith in Jesus Christ
to all who believe.

GOSPEL Mark 11:1-11

The Wisdom of God:
God’s word made new.

HOMILY

SONG ‘We limit not the truth of God’ (453)

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Confronting and comforting God:
hear our prayer.
... By the power of the Spirit,
we entrust our prayers to you, O Christ,
confessing you as Saviour to the glory of God.
Amen.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist

OFFERING ‘For the life that you have given’ (774)

God of all creation, you bring forth
bread from the earth and fruit from the vine.
By your Holy Spirit, this bread and wine
will be for us the body and blood of Christ.
All you have made is good.
Your love endures for ever.

THE PEACE

The peace of Jesus, Heir to the House of David,
be with you all. And also with you.

SONG ‘Holy, holy ...’ (TIS 132)

INVITATION

We are all invited to take part in a (mostly) silent Eucharist.

GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

God is here.
God’s Spirit is with us.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to God.
Let us give thanks to the God of love.
It is right to offer thanks and praise.

We recall the creativity and goodness of God.
We give thanks for the law and the prophets,
the wisdom and the promises of God.
We remember Jesus, the Child of God, the Christ,
God’s very Self among us.
We remember his life and ministry, his death on the cross,
his rising to new life with God.
We call on the Holy Spirit to bless what we do here,
to make Christ present in bread and wine,
to transform us into Christ’s body for the world.

THE LORD’S PRAYER

O God our Mother
and our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your dominion come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.

BREAKING OF THE BREAD

Jesus says, This is my body.
Jesus says, This is my blood.

COMMUNION

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

We thank you, O God, for feeding us
with the body and blood of your Christ.
Through Christ we offer you our very selves.
Send us out in the power of your Spirit
to live and work to your glory. Amen.

The Sending Forth of the People of God

Notices.

SONG ‘O Lord Jesus Marrkapmirr’ (253)

BLESSING

Our God has given us
an example of unselfish love
in the person of Jesus the Christ.
Through your service of God and neighbour
may you receive countless blessings.
Amen.

You believe that by dying
Christ destroyed death for ever.
May God give you everlasting life.
Amen.

Jesus humbled himself for our sakes.
May you follow his example
and share in his resurrection.
Amen.

And the blessing of God,
Creator, Redeemer, and Giver of Life,
go with you, today and always.

DISMISSAL

Go in peace to love God.
We go in faith and hope.
Amen.

During Lent we depart in silence.
