A SERVICE OF WORD AND SACRAMENT

Easter Season, Year B
South Sydney Uniting Church
May, 2015

The Gathering of the People of God

CALL TO WORSHIP

Setting the Table.

SONG OF PRAISE ‘Stars and planets flung in orbit’ (186)

GREETING

In the name of the Father,
and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit;
one God, Mother of us all. Amen.

The free kindness of our Saviour Jesus Christ
and the love of God
and the friendship of the Holy Spirit
be with you all.
And also with you.

Acknowledgement of Indigenous custodians; welcome to visitors.

CONFESSION

Because our personal sins grieve you
and hurt other people:
Ky-ri-e, Ky-ri-e, e-le-i-son.

Because our social and ecological sins
hold others in bondage and oppression:
Christ-e, Christ-e, e-le-i-son.

Because you grant us the joy of forgiveness
whenever we return to you in genuine repentance:
Ky-ri-e, Ky-ri-e, e-le-i-son.

... O loving God,
to turn away from you is to fall,
to turn towards you is to rise,
and to stand before you is to abide for ever.

Grant us, dear God,
in all our duties your help;
in all our uncertainties your guidance;
in all our dangers your protection;
and in all our sorrows your peace;
through Jesus Christ our Sovereign. Amen.

DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS

Jesus says: “I am now part of you, my way is yours,
you will not get lost” (John 14:6).

COLLECT

Sanctifying God,
your gift to us
is one who overcame the system which enslaves
and feeds upon the victim:
send us to your world to speak the truth of peace,
to stand with those who suffer,
to show another way;
through Jesus Christ, the life of all things.
Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word

O God, open our hearts and minds
by the power of your Holy Spirit,
that, as the Scriptures are read and proclaimed,
we may hear your word with joy. Amen.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! ...

GOSPEL John 17:6-19

As the wings of doves over nestlings,
so may the wings of the Spirit be over our hearts.
As the mouths of chicks toward hens,
may our lives be open to God’s Wisdom.
(Ode 28, The Odes of Solomon)

HOMILY

OFFERING

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION

O God who sends us into the world, hear our prayer.

... God, may we look forward with hope to our resurrection,
for you have made us your own,
and restored the joy of our youth.

We ask this through our Saviour Jesus Christ,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist

THE PEACE

Pray for peace, look for peace,
speak of peace, act in peace; accept peace.
The peace of the Reconciling One be always with you.
And also with you.

COMMUNION SONG ‘By your priestly prayer …’ (529)

GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

God is here.
God’s Spirit is with us.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to God.
Let us give thanks to the God of love.
It is right to offer thanks and praise.

N: We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God,
source of life abundant.
E: Always and already you have created the world.
W: You made us in your image, and taught us to walk in your ways;
you did not forget us.
S: Time and again you called us to live in the fullness of your love.

And so ... we lift our voices to magnify you as we sing:

Holy, Holy, Holy God, wisdom, strength and hope,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of our God.
Hosanna in the highest.

N: You looked with favour upon Mary, your willing servant,
that she might conceive and bear a child, Jesus the holy one.
E: Living among us, Jesus loved us.
He broke bread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick,
and proclaimed good news to the poor.
W: He yearned to share a gathering love,
yet we were heedless of his call.
S: Then the time came for him to face a crucifying force
and to be glorified by you.
On the night before he died for us ...

Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation,
and remembering Christ crucified and risen,
who was and is and is to come,
we offer to you our gifts of bread and wine,
and ourselves, a living sacrifice.
Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts
that they may be the body and blood of Christ.
Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth
and make us your new creation,
the body of Christ given for the world you have made.
In the fullness of time bring us, with all your saints,
from every tribe and language and people and nation,
to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation of the world.
Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
to you be honour, glory, and praise,
for ever and ever. Amen.
THE LORD’S PRAYER

Abba God in heaven, glory to you!
Your rule of love renews the earth.
In your name, we take part in that renewal
helping, and not harming,
caring, and not coercing ...
We pray that we might receive with thanks
the bread we need,
the money we need,
the warmth we need ...
We pray that forgiveness and freedom
flow through our lives.
Teach us that in sharing life
we live life to the full ...
Remind us that evil is real.
Still, we are not afraid of it,
but confident
that love is stronger than hate,
justice other than revenge,
true peace the work of your Spirit.
