Covenant – placing of sticks from Gadigal land
The Uniting Church in Australia’s covenant with the Uniting Aboriginal and Islander Christian Congress (UAICC) invites specific and dynamic expression. South Sydney Uniting Church is committed to this covenant (a mutual and binding agreement) and seeks to give expression to it in all ministries.
A regular feature of our Sunday worship is a ritual inspired by Gudang Elder and member in association at SSUC, Pearl Wymarra. Aunty Pearl invited the children to help gather sticks from Gadigal land surrounding the church. The sticks, symbols of the goodness of the land and generations of wisdom and care for the land, are placed on the altar-table at the start of worship.
